The Defence & Industry e-Portal
The ePortal
supports the Defence Strategic Reform Program (SRP) by providing the
basis of a cost effective, two way, e-business service delivery channel
for defence industry to access information on DMO Projects, Priority
Industry Capabilities, the Skilling Australia’s Defence Industry (SADI),
the Defence White Paper 2009, Defending Australia in the Asia Pacific
Century: Force 2030 and the public Defence Capability Plan 2009.
The Bulletin Board feature of the
ePortal is increasingly being used to advertise forthcoming industry
briefings, and to reach out to potential new market entrants. This in
turn increases competition by broadening the potential supplier base, and
delivering enhanced value for money in procurement.

Welcome
Welcome to the site of the Counsellor Defence Materiel,
located at the Embassy of Australia in Washington D.C.
DEFMAT(W) is part of the Defence Materiel Organisation and
performs three key roles: procurement (the principal responsibility);
understanding and influencing the United States' regulatory environment
including legislation, policy interpretation and procedures on Australia/US
procurement, and an export support function for Australian companies.
Procurement for the
Australian Defence Forces
The principal mission of this office is to procure equipment and
services in North America on behalf of the
Australian Defence Forces. This is accomplished both through Government to
Government procurement with the US Department of Defense (Foreign Military
Sales), and also direct purchasing from commercial suppliers in the region.
The DEFMAT(W) Foreign Military Sales and Commercial
Contracting sections handle the purchasing of the necessary goods and
services, and the Transportation & Compliance section oversees the
logistics of moving the freight between North America and Australia.
Policy
The policy/regulatory function is undertaken by the Counsellor
Defence Materiel, in conjunction with the Defence Materiel Attache, and
with broader support from everyone in the DEFMAT(W) office and other
Australian Defence Force (ADF) staff based in Washington. Activities within the policy
and regulatory area include development and review of Memoranda of
Understanding that facilitate the business processes between the two
countries; engagement with those who can modify the laws and regulations;
and attempts to educate the US
defense industry and government community about Australia
's capabilities, needs, and our value to the US.
